A Tradition of Excellence

The Szechuan style of cooking that has existed for hundreds of years originated in the Szechuan province of China. Though the culinary style was Chinese in origin, the many ingredients used were decidedly worldly. Imported from all over the globe, they included (but were not limited to) Mexican chilies, corn from the New World, white potatoes and sweet potatoes. Combined with the old world Szechuan style, these New World ingredients shaped one of the first international cosmopolitan cuisines.
Many have experienced the unparalleled Chinese food here at Szechuan restaurant in Sedona although most are unaware of the tradition of excellence that is at the heart of all we do.
History & Tradition
The history and tradition here at Szechuan begins with our patriarch, Mr. (Jason) Tseng. Our father’s journey to culinary excellence began in Taiwan in 1977. As a chef, Mr. Tseng was instrumental in revolutionizing the menu and level of service for this first restaurant. In 1980, after ensuring their continued success, Mr. Tseng was invited to Korea to take the position of Head Chef for the Hyatt Resort. During his time with Hyatt Resorts Mr. Tseng perfected his culinary and restaurateur skills.
In 1990, when asked by a friend to lend his genius to a restaurant opening in beautiful Flagstaff, Arizona, Mr. Tseng journeyed halfway around the world, gifting the locals with his sought after culinary delights. His time here would last only four years before he then returned to Taiwan.
However, the magical lure of Flagstaff and Northern Arizona would not be forgotten, and, in 1998 Mr. Tseng returned, opening the first Szechuan restaurant in Flagstaff. Supported by the local community’s continued love and demand for our food, the doors remained open for ten-years. Then in 2006, Szechuan restaurant opened its doors amidst the beautiful red rocks of Sedona, Arizona, recognizing the local need for healthy, high-quality Chinese cuisine.
Then & Now
In 2009, after over 30 years of dedicated service, Mr. Tseng passed on management of the Szechuan restaurant to his son Jerry who to this day maintains the tradition of excellence established by his father before him.
This commitment to revolutionary customer service led to the opening of the Martini Cocktail Bar with a full Martini menu, as well as the expansion of the main menu to now include Sushi.
The only Chinese restaurant in Sedona, Szechuan has continued to serve locals and tourists alike with the same commitment to excellence started by the founder over 40 years ago.
